Educational Talent Search, a Federally funded TRiO program

Talent Search staff have discovered that there are a lot of myths about the ACT test.  Parents may also make incorrect assumptions about the test, and there is a lot of vital information that parents may not be aware.  We have taken the time to answer some of the more common questions and myths.

ACT advises that students taking the ACT for the first time select a date that is at least two months before application deadlines of colleges and scholarships to ensure that scores are available.  In fact, testing in a student’s junior year is best because they are likely to have completed the coursework that corresponds to the test material.

How does my child sign up to take the ACT?
An ACT registration packet may be obtained from your child’s Talent Search guidance specialist or high school counselor.  You may also sign up online through ACT’s web site at www.act.org.

My child has already taken the ACT test.  S/he does not need to take it again.
Actually, it does not hurt if your child takes the ACT more than once.  The ACT can be taken a maximum of 12 times, and it is the highest ACT score that is used by colleges and scholarships.

I cannot afford the fees for the ACT test.
Because your child is a Talent Search participant, s/he qualifies for a fee waiver.  Fee waivers are also available for those students who meet certain income guidelines.  Students must be a current junior or senior in high school and can only receive fee waivers two times.  Only the basic fees are covered; late registration fees, more than four college choices, test date changes, or test center changes are not covered.  You can register online with a fee waiver.  To obtain a fee waiver, contact your Talent Search guidance specialist or your child’s high school counselor.
